Proverbs 14:34 “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."

If this Proverb is true (and it is) then America just might be doomed! We are in trouble….America is in trouble not only because our nation has abandoned righteousness, in many cases we actually despise righteousness! In fact, our nation not only tolerates sin, sin has now a become matter of national policy and law. And unless America repents and returns to righteousness, America is doomed.

This Proverb should remind us of something Billy Graham wrote. He wrote: “Some years ago, my wife, Ruth, was reading the draft of a book I was writing. When she finished a section describing the terrible downward spiral of our nation’s moral standards and the idolatry of worshiping false gods such as technology and sex, she startled me by exclaiming, “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” (My Heart Aches for America)

“Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”

When a nation is exalted that means it’s been raised up in rank, honor, power and wealth and when a nation is reproached it’s a disgrace and it’s scorned and shamed because of its faults. America was once a righteous nation and was exalted in the world, but no longer.

America was once a righteous nation, but that doesn’t mean we were a perfect nation. You see, there’s a difference between having the righteousness of Christ and being self-righteous. Once there was a time when we as a nation leaned heavily upon our need for the righteousness of Christ and His Gospel, but now we’ve rejected that and instead we hold to our own self-righteousness and sin.

Reproach has come to our nation and I believe that God is giving us a final warning before taking action. If you read the Bible you’ll see that God puts up with a lot from people and gives many warnings before He brings judgment to a nation. All throughout the Bible God sent His Prophets to the nation of Israel who brought forth His Word warning them that God would take strong action against them if they did not change their ways.

Likewise, America has received many strong warnings over the last generation; God STILL has His Prophets in our nation, although they’re fewer and fewer all the time. For decades, God has been warning America through His preachers that judgment was coming if we didn’t change our course, change our behavior and return to righteousness.

But instead of heeding God’s warnings we as a country have shook our fist in God’s Face and have said “We’ll do what we want to do! You can stay out of our business. GET OUT!”

That’s not always been our response, however. In the past God warned America and America heeded His warning and we experienced what was called the 1st 2nd and 3rd Great Awakenings. These were periods of unprecedented spiritual revival in America.

The First Great Awakening began in the 1700’s with the preaching of men like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield; the Second Great Awakening began in the early 1800’s and lasted to the mid-1800s with the preaching of Finney and others like him. The Third Great Awakening was led by men such as DL Moody and it lasted until the early 1900’s.

All 3 of the Great Awakenings were periods of great spiritual revival brought on by our willingness to heed God’s warnings and in each Great Awakening America experienced a national revival which led to the genuine conversion of millions of Americans, which in turn caused this country to change its course and its behavior and turn back to God and His righteousness. And every time the nation was exalted.

Is there any hope for America? Yes, there is hope. If we as a nation repent quickly and return to God we can avoid His judgement and be exalted once again. God told Solomon, “If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Is there hope for America? No, there is no hope if we as a nation refuse to repent of our many sins. If we continue down the path of sin then America will eventually go the way of so many other godless, sinful nations that fell under the judgment of God and America will disappear from the stage of human history forever.

Psalms 144:11-15 says “Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of foreigners, whose mouth speaks vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood: That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner pillars, polished after the similitude of a palace: That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets: That our oxen may be strong to labor; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no outcry in our streets. Happy is that people, that is in such a state: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.”

America needs to remember that “happy is that people, whose God is the LORD” and we need to realize that our only hope is a return to righteousness through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. America’s only hope is to become a righteous nation that hates sin. If we don't do that then America is truly doomed.
